As the Finger Lakes region braces for a heat wave with temperatures soaring into the high 90s, it’s important to protect our pets from the dangers of extreme heat.
Watch for Heatstroke Signs
Pets can quickly overheat. Look for signs like rapid breathing, excessive drooling, and a high body temperature. If you notice these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact your vet.
Keep Pets Hydrated
Ensure your pets always have access to fresh water. If they show signs of dehydration, such as lethargy or sunken eyes, give them water flavored with broth or ice cubes to chew on.
Provide Cooling Supplies
Use items like battery-operated fans, cooling vests, and wet towels to keep your pets cool. Never leave pets in a hot car, and avoid walking them on hot asphalt to protect their paws.
