Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray has been suspended for one week without pay for leaving his gun unattended at police headquarters, the Board of Public Safety announced Friday.

The incident occurred on April 8, and while the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office found no criminal wrongdoing, Murray acknowledged a “lapse in judgment” and accepted the suspension. Both city and independent DA investigations were conducted and completed.

Murray expressed regret, stating, “I take full responsibility and apologize for this lapse in judgment.” The Board of Public Safety emphasized its commitment to accountability and transparency in handling the matter.
