Skeletal remains discovered by a surveying crew at 434 E. Union St. in Newark on Monday have been identified as Kevin Heise, the Monroe County Medical Examiner confirmed.

Heise was reported missing in September 2022. Despite extensive efforts, including a recent search of the Erie Canal and its shoreline, Heise had not been found until now, according to a statement from Newark Police.

Heise was last seen on September 2, 2022, getting into a blue car or truck in the East Union Street area. With no permanent address, Heise was known to move frequently, complicating search efforts. His family reported him missing to the Village of Newark on September 5, 2022.

The Newark Police Department and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the discovery of the remains on Monday afternoon. The scene was processed, and the remains were sent to the Monroe County Medical Examiner for identification. The investigation into Heise’s disappearance and death is ongoing, police say.
