Portion of South Rim Trail at Taughannock Falls rerouted to protect falcons

A section of the South Rim Trail at Taughannock Falls State Park has been rerouted to protect nesting peregrine falcons, the park announced Saturday. The 1.2-mile trail along the gorge’s south edge, near Cayuga Lake, was adjusted to reduce stress on the birds.

Last month, the park postponed an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of New York State Parks due to concerns for the nesting falcons. Increased trail activity had been causing stress behaviors in the birds.

The park, in consultation with the DEC, NYS Park Biologists, and Stewardship staff, urges visitors to use the rerouted trail and move quietly through the area to protect the endangered species. Cooperation is appreciated to ensure the safety and well-being of the falcons.
