Mikayla Baker, a 19-year-old sophomore at Keuka College, has published a book of poetry titled “Phases,” which features over 200 original poems. Baker, a digital marketing major, used her winter 2023 Field Period—an annual 140-hour internship or academic pursuit—to complete the book, which was published in February.
Baker, who began writing poetry in middle school, found her way back to it after a difficult period last year. “I think a poet is somebody who can translate feelings into words,” she said. Her book, “Phases,” has received a five-star rating on Amazon and landed on the bestseller list for young adult poetry.
Balancing her studies and a part-time job, Baker manages to jot down ideas on her phone and writes late into the night. Her next collection, “Tides,” is already in the works but will wait until summer. “Right now I’m just trying to make it through the semester,” she said.
