Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire on Mill Hill Road in the town of Dix early Saturday morning. Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by multiple law enforcement agencies, arrived at the scene around 7:45 a.m. to manage an active situation. The incident prompted a swift law enforcement response, including officers from nearby counties and local police.
The investigation quickly expanded to a secondary location on State Route 414 in the town of Catlin. Emergency protocols were enacted to secure the area and provide medical support. Several fire departments and medical teams were dispatched to assist.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Rexford Smith, also known as ‘Ely’, from Catlin, remains at large. Authorities believe he may be armed and urge the public to report any information to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office. The area remains an active crime scene as the investigation continues, but officials assure there is no direct threat to the public.
