USDA declares Cayuga County disaster area after dairy farm fire

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Cayuga County as a primary natural disaster area following a severe fire at Rodan Farm in Genoa. The fire, which occurred on February 28, resulted in the loss of a barn and numerous cows, prompting federal intervention. Affected farms in Cayuga and neighboring counties now qualify for emergency loans to aid in recovery.

Investigators traced the cause of the fire to high winds that caused aluminum conductors to spark near the barn. The sparks ignited the wooden structure, leading to a rapid spread of the fire that ultimately destroyed the barn and all livestock within it. The Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, supported by several other local departments, responded to the blaze.

In the aftermath, the community rallied to support the Bassetts, owners of the devastated farm, through a GoFundMe page. To date, the fundraiser has collected over $31,000 from 333 donations, reflecting strong community support during this challenging time.
