Changes coming to major transportation overhaul in Hornell: What’s changing on Rt. 36?

New York State has revised its plans for upgrading the state Route 36 Hornell Gateway Corridor, officials said at a public meeting on Tuesday.

Originally designed to extend further north, the $55 million project has been scaled back due to increased costs and budget constraints.

The revised project now focuses on a three-mile stretch of the highway, aiming to enhance traffic safety and create better pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.

During the forum at Hornell High School, Department of Transportation (DOT) engineers presented several key features of the project, including a new roundabout at the intersection of Route 36 and Route 66, and significant improvements near the Walmart-Wegmans Hornell Plaza, a hotspot for daily traffic.

The project will also introduce a multi-use trail running the entire length of the route, as well as various engineering enhancements at critical points to reduce traffic congestion and accidents.
