Governor Kathy Hochul announced a historic move on Wednesday to establish Empire AI, a consortium aimed at positioning New York as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research. In collaboration with the Legislature, the consortium was included in the FY 2025 Enacted Budget. A $275 million state investment will fund the creation of a cutting-edge AI computing center at the University at Buffalo. This center will promote responsible AI research and development, aiming to benefit the public.
Governor Hochul emphasized the strategic importance of AI, stating, “Whoever dominates the AI industry will dominate the next chapter of history and we want New York to win the race for the future.” The Empire AI Consortium is designed to foster an innovative environment that will drive new discoveries, create jobs, and transform daily life in New York.
The consortium includes seven founding institutions such as Columbia University and Cornell University. It will enhance collaboration and efficiency among New York’s top research entities, facilitating advancements in AI that uphold safety and ethical standards. This initiative, backed by over $400 million in public and private investments, aims to strengthen the state’s economy and bolster national security.
