Auburn man admits to illegal firearm possession in federal court

Jason P. Benedict, 47, from Auburn pleaded guilty to possessing a 20-gauge shotgun as a convicted felon, officials announced. The plea was entered in the federal court of Syracuse under the observation of the United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, and key representatives from the ATF and DEA.


During his plea, Benedict confessed to possessing and later transferring the shotgun to another individual in Syracuse on January 21, 2023. This weapon, along with drugs and other items, was seized during a raid by ATF and DEA agents in June 2023 at the recipient’s residence.

Scheduled for sentencing on August 23, 2024, Benedict could face up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
