A potential crisis was averted at the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport Monday evening when a single-engine private plane made a safe landing after declaring an emergency. The pilot reported an issue with the landing gear, as only two of the three gears appeared locked according to the plane’s instrument lights. However, the Socata TB20 Trinidad, carrying four seats, landed without incident or injury.
Quick action and coordination among the airport personnel and emergency responders ensured the safety of the flight, which had traveled from Morristown, New Jersey. The successful landing at around 7 pm was facilitated by a manual check confirming the third gear’s lock, alongside visual confirmation from air traffic control.
The emergency response team, including the Airport Crash Fire Rescue, Lansing Fire and Rescue, Bangs Ambulance, and Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, were praised for their readiness and efficiency.
