Avon police chief suspended amid multiple investigations

In an unexpected turn of events, Avon’s Police Chief, Joseph Geer, was suspended without pay during an emergency board meeting held by the Village of Avon, as disclosed by a town councilman present at the meeting. The decision, announced by Village Mayor Thomas Freeman, comes in the wake of inquiries by the New York State Comptroller’s Office into the police department’s bookkeeping and scheduling practices, tasks managed by Geer.

The suspension coincides with a separate FBI investigation into potential false claims submitted by a service provider for the Avon Central School district, where Geer also served as a school resource officer. Although the district previously confirmed the investigation, it did not specify whether Geer was directly implicated.

Details surrounding the suspension remain scarce, with the village board providing no further information following the announcement. Efforts to contact Mayor Freeman for additional comments have yet to yield a response.
