Monroe County paid tribute to James Sauer, a pilot who tragically lost his life in a Mercy Flight helicopter crash in April 2022, by dedicating a section of Davis Road in his honor. The dedication took place in the areas of Chili and Riga, where the Sauer family has lived for many years. Two commemorative signs were installed at significant intersections along the road, marking a lasting memory of Sauer’s contributions and sacrifices.

The signs, placed at the intersections of Attridge Road in Riga and Union Street in Chili, bear the inscription “In Honor of James E. Sauer and his sacrifice for our community.” They also feature symbols representing the Army National Guard, the Rochester Police Department, the New York State Police, and Mercy Flight, acknowledging Sauer’s service across these organizations. James Sauer, who was 60 at the time of the accident, had a distinguished career as a Rochester Police officer and a pilot for the mentioned agencies, including 40 years of service with the New York Army National Guard, during which he was deployed overseas multiple times.

Marie Sauer, James’s widow, expressed her gratitude for the gesture, highlighting it as a permanent tribute to her husband’s honor, commitment, and service. The dedication serves as a reminder of James Sauer’s dedication to his community and country, ensuring his legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered by those he served and protected.
