The New York Yankees received scary news on Monday as their ace Gerrit Cole is headed for an MRI on his pitching elbow, manager Aaron Boone told reporters.

Cole, 33, has had trouble recovering after pitching this spring.

“I think there’s a level of discomfort,” Boone said. “But I wouldn’t describe it as he’s in pain.”

The last non-COVID-related IL stint for Cole was at the end of the 2016 season when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates and had elbow inflammation.

The right-hander has thrown 1279.2 innings since 2017, the most in Major League Baseball.
