The Thruway Authority is introducing Emergency Ramp Control gates along parts of the Thruway, aiming to enhance safety and operational efficiency in the area. The installation of these gates began last year, with plans to equip each interchange by the end of next year. These gates are designed to control traffic entry during emergencies, improving the safety and response capabilities on the Thruway.
Thruway Authority officials said the gates enable a quicker and safer response to emergencies and adverse weather conditions. By blocking the roadways, these gates allow Maintenance Workers and State Police to focus on addressing snow, ice, and other incidents on the Thruway system more effectively.
Although a new addition locally these emergency gates have been operational in Western New York since 2011, demonstrating their effectiveness in managing traffic and enhancing safety during critical situations.
