Ryan Corbett, a 40-year-old man from Dansville, has been detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan since August last year, and now his family, along with U.S. government officials, are actively advocating for his release.
After initially keeping a low profile, Corbett’s family and representatives are now publicly calling for action.
Family spokesperson Erin Pelton revealed that Ryan, who had returned to Afghanistan in 2022 to manage his business affairs and pay his employees, was wrongfully detained.
The U.S. State Department, recognizing the unlawful nature of his detention, has classified Corbett as wrongfully detained.
Pelton emphasized the family’s initial strategy of silence, hoping to avoid increasing Corbett’s value as a detainee.
U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney, representing New York’s 24th District, stated that Corbett’s release is a top priority at all levels of government.
The administration, State Department, and other agencies are working together with representatives of Corbett’s family to facilitate his return.
While The Wall Street Journal reported that the Taliban have made specific demands for Corbett’s release, the details remain confidential.
