The county has earmarked $84,000 for this initiative, aimed at supporting projects that preserve unique landscapes and areas, and enhance public interaction and experiences with these sites. This funding opportunity is open to both government and private organizations interested in contributing to the county’s environmental and recreational development.

This year’s grants from the fund have supported diverse projects, including the construction of tennis and pickleball courts in Dresden, improvements to Seneca Lake beach access at Torrey’s town park, and a disc golf project at Fulkerson Winery in Starkey. The funding for these grants is partially sourced from the county’s occupancy tax revenue. Each grant awarded requires a matching contribution of 50% from the recipients, which can be fulfilled either through additional funding from other sources or in-kind services. Exceptions to this requirement are considered only under rare circumstances.

The application deadline for these grants is set for 4 p.m. on January 24, with the announcement of grant awards expected on March 15. Prospective applicants can access the grant application and policy information on the Yates County Planning Department website. Submissions can be made digitally via email to [email protected] or by mail to the Yates County Planning office at 417 Liberty Street, Suite 1112, Penn Yan, NY 14527. This grant program represents an ongoing commitment by Yates County to foster environmental preservation and recreational opportunities for its residents and visitors.
