If you’re considering moving house in the next year, planning ahead ensures the process goes as smoothly as possible. This way, you’re less likely to feel stressed or overwhelmed and can focus your attention on the many benefits of moving.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for a stress-free move!

1. Increase the value of your current property.

The housing market is incredibly volatile, which can sometimes make it difficult to sell your current home. However, you can increase your chance of a quick sale by making a real effort to increase the value of your property. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, such as by improving your home’s curb appeal. After all, studies have found that “good curb appeal can raise a property’s value up to seven percent.”

2. Start packing as early as you can.

Packing up your home will take up a lot more of your time than you expect it to – and giving yourself as much of a headstart as possible ensures you feel ready for the move. This also gives you the chance to properly declutter ahead of time.

When packing, ensure that you label each box clearly based on its contents or the room you’d like to place it in. This will make unpacking much easier, as you won’t have to open endless boxes to find what you are looking for.

3. Hire a local moving team.

While you may be sticking to a tight budget when moving, hiring a moving company to transport boxes and bulky furniture goes a long way toward facilitating a stress-free move. After all, it means you don’t have to try and figure out the logistics of fitting hundreds of boxes into your car or do any heavy lifting!

4. Change your address on important forms.

Many people forget to notify banks, medical facilities, and even their employers of their change of address, which could mean that they miss out on crucial correspondence or information. As such, you should inform the relevant parties of your new address as soon as possible or arrange for your mail to be forwarded.

5. Keep your budget in mind.

With the cost of moving increasing year on year, staying on top of your budget may feel impossible, but it’s important that you hold yourself accountable. After all, overspending now can land you in a difficult situation moving forward, especially if you are unable to pay bills or cover the costs of your expenses.

Furthermore, there are many ways in which you can keep the costs of moving down. For example, if you start decluttering your home, you could sell old furniture, clothes, and belongings as opposed to simply throwing them away. This means more money in your pocket come moving day. Alternatively, you can save money by DIY-ing home upgrades instead of hiring someone to do them for you, though you should ensure your skills are up to scratch ahead of time. Otherwise, you could cause more damage that you then have to pay for.
