The state of New York in a groundbreaking partnership with the IRS, has unveiled plans for a new e-filing tool set to simplify the tax filing process for New Yorkers.
This free tool, slated for a 2024 rollout, is expected to help eligible residents file both their state and federal tax returns jointly and swiftly. Unlike other available tools where federal and state taxes must be filed separately, this system promises to consolidate the process. Last year, IRS Free File saw a meager uptake in Monroe County, with only around 200 users.
CASH (Creating Assets, Savings & Hope), a community organization, emphasized the need for such tools, citing the complexities and intimidation surrounding tax filings.
Notably, taxpayers in Monroe County spend an average of $300 for tax preparation services. The new system aims to reduce this expense by offering an efficient, free alternative.
However, users are advised to exercise caution when inputting data to avoid potential pitfalls.
