In the latest findings from Owl Lab’s 2023 “State of Work” report, employees returning to the office five days a week are spending an average of $51 daily on expenses such as commuting, parking, and meals.
The breakdown indicates employees typically spend $14 on commuting, $8 on parking, $13 on breakfast or coffee, and $16 on lunch. In an interview with CNBC, Frank Weishaupt, the CEO of the videoconferencing company, emphasized that in-person work has become “wildly more expensive” post-pandemic.
The report also highlighted the changing dynamics of workplace relationships, with 46% of employees stating they found it easier to build connections with colleagues remotely.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that between August and September 2022, approximately 27% of the U.S. workforce was working remotely, at least part-time. However, data from the MIT Sloan School of Management in June suggested this figure could be closer to half of all American workers.
