NYS Health Department reports increase in COVID-19 cases, urges precaution

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The New York State Department of Health has announced a concerning increase in COVID-19 hospital admissions and reported cases.

According to data from August 2, hospital admissions have risen 22% compared to the previous week, averaging at 0.6 per 100,000 residents or over 100 admissions daily. Reported cases have also surged by 55%, leading to an average of 824 reported cases per day across the state.

While hospital bed capacity is not currently a concern, officials are emphasizing that hospitalizations are a more reliable indicator of the virus’s spread, as most cases go unreported.

The department is urging New Yorkers to exercise caution, particularly as summer activities increase. High-risk individuals are encouraged to take precautions to prevent serious illness, and at-home testing options are readily available at local pharmacies. Prompt treatment is essential for those testing positive, with COVID-19 medications widely available by prescription. The department also reiterates the importance of avoiding contact with others if infected and emphasizes the continued availability of vaccines and booster doses for those who need them.
