Victor-based Constellation Brands now boasts the top-selling beer brand in the United States as Mexican lager Modelo Especial surpasses Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light, which has dominated the position since 2001.
According to a Nielsen data analysis by Bump Williams Consulting, Modelo accounted for 8.4% of U.S. retail-store beer sales in the four weeks ending June 3, compared to Bud Light’s 7.3%.
Constellation acquired Modelo for $4.75 billion in the U.S. market in 2013 from Anheuser-Busch InBev, which continues to own the brand in markets outside of the U.S.
