A routine traffic stop turned violent on Friday when Trooper Richard Albert was shot in the arm after pulling over a speeding SUV on I-88 Eastbound near Duanesburg.
The assailant, identified as Nelson Troche, 32, of Schenectady opened fire on Trooper Albert, who then returned fire, causing Troche and a passenger to flee the vehicle.
Troche was located approximately an hour and a half later suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was subsequently pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center.
Meanwhile, Trooper Albert, who was quickly taken to Ellis Hospital following the incident, has since been discharged.
State Police have expressed gratitude to the assisting agencies and the medical staff at Ellis Hospital.
