A proposed bill aiming to decrease the annual number of mandated lockdown and active shooter drills in New York schools from four to one may not gain final approval from the Legislature.

Should the bill pass, state senators anticipate it would also mandate a week’s advance notice for parents before such drills, with the option to exempt their child from participation.

The bill also suggests age-appropriate training and guidelines to address students’ physical and emotional needs post-training.

The proposal was introduced in late April and rapidly gained support from parents urging changes to the current system, following concerns over the possible trauma induced by the drills.
