New airline planning service at Rochester airport: Avelo arrives in May

Avelo Airlines announced on Wednesday that it will be coming to the Frederick Douglass – Greater Rochester International Airport. The airline’s arrival brings non-stop service to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, according to the announcement.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said that the airport’s number of passengers continues to grow, with more passengers coming through the airport each year. Bello is bullish on the prospects of what 2023 and beyond will give for the airport.

The Frederick Douglass – Greater Rochester International Airport saw 1.1 million departing passengers in 2022, the highest number since 2019. This past January, the airport saw a 44 percent increase.

Avelo’s announcement comes after Frontier Airlines announced that it will suspend operations at the airport at the end of the winter and spring season. According to the airport, Frontier Airlines is leaving because it was not making its marker points while it was there.

Starting on June 14, Avelo Airlines will begin its service at the airport, operating the route to Raleigh-Durham twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. The move is expected to bring more passengers to the airport and further boost its growth.
