Great Northern Mall is officially dead.
A letter was sent out to tenants on October 27th indicating that Great Northern Mall would shut down permanently on November 20th.
The short notice sent to tenants from Deborah Shane, General Manager of Great Northern Mall, read as follows:
“I am writing you to let you know that Great Northern Mall will permanently close on November 20, 2022. Accordingly, Great Northern Mall Holding LLC, the owner of the mall, is hereby terminating your lease. You will need to vacate your premises in the mall no later than November 20, 2022. Thank you for your cooperation.”
The structure itself was heavily criticized by tenants over the last several years. The property had fallen into significant disrepair, and the parking lots lack of lighting was another big issue.
While the mall itself is likely dead, the property shouldn’t be considered a total loss. Hart Lyman Company, a Syracuse developer, plans to level the structure, and rebuild a new lifestyle center. That will include high-end retail, grocery stores, a movie theater, and other amenities.
Details or a timeline for that plan have not been publicized, though.
