GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team defeated Manhattanville College in the first game of the William Smith classic by a score of 4-0.
The Herons outshot the Valiants 33-3 on the day with 20 of them being on goal compared to Manhatanville’s one. Junior goalie Kristen McCormick led the Herons defense playing in all 60 minutes and recording one save.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- Just 2:15 into the game, the herons were awarded a penalty corner. Senior Lauren Jackson recorded her first goal of the season off the penalty corner with an assist from Mary Kate Breward.
- In the second quarter, senior Molly Dutton scored her first goal of the season while recording two shots on the day.
- At 32:58 in the third quarter, graduate student Emily Leonard slipped the ball past the Valiant goalie recording her third goal of the season. The assist was credited to Rebecca Mantione.
- Just 1:26 later, junior Sofia Pattillo rounded out the scoring for the Herons recording her fourth goal of the season. Mantione recorded her second assist of the day and third of the season.
COACHES CORNER:
“Today was an excellent total team victory,” Head Coach Sophie Riskie ’07 said. ” Every player worked incredibly hard and implemented our game plan. The team showed a lot of composure today, executing two great corner penalty goals. Im really proud of the team, and were looking forward to tomorrows game against Lebanon Valley.”
