A proposal to create a parking lot for customers of O’Toole’s Tavern at 116 Osborne Street has been withdrawn.
The Citizen reports that the bar’s owner, John Voorhees withdrew the proposal to build the lot in a historically significant portion of the city.
The property was once known as New Guinea, a settlement of free Black men and women founded by Harry and Kate Freeman in the early 19th century.
That point was raised in a meeting during the spring about the proposed parking lot.
When The Citizen reached out to Voorhees for comment, he hung up.
