You must be 21 to legally buy whipped cream in New York.
That’s right, many New Yorkers don’t realize this, but there’s a relatively new law on the books, which requires anyone buying canisters of whipped cream to be 21 years old.
Why?
Whipped cream cans are filled with nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas. If used improperly, it can be dangerous, which is why supporters of the law that went into effect last November say it’s important to have the age restriction.
Reaction to the law, as well as the idea that there’s widespread misuse of whipped cream was mixed. Some shoppers understood, while others felt it was an unnecessary burden placed on stores and businesses selling it.
