Waterloo man charged with assault, criminal possession after firearm goes off, striking person

Police arrested a 24-year-old Waterloo man on assault and other charges after a firearm went off in the village.

On July 3 around 2:41 p.m. officers arrested Ryan Miles, 24, of Waterloo for second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The charges stem from an incident where Miles was in possession of a firearm that was not legally registered in New York State.

Police say Miles recklessly caused the firearm to go off, unintentionally striking another person.

The victim was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital where they were deemed stable.

Miles was transported to the Seneca County Correctional Facility to await Central Arraignment Court.

The Waterloo Police Department was assisted on the scene by Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Seneca Falls Police Department, New York State Park Police, North Seneca Ambulance, Mercy Flight, and the Waterloo Fire Department.
