Supplement Security Income (SSI) payments will be sent out on Friday, July 1, 2022.The maximum monthly benefit is $841, but the average payment is $621. The average payment has increased since last year, thanks to the 5.9% COLA.
Who is eligible for SSI?
SSI is a program run by the Social Security Administration (SSA). This program in particular aims to provide assistance to people over 65 and people that are blind, disabled, and have little to no income.
Along with a disability, your assets are also considered before determining eligibility. The asset requirements are:
- no more than $2,000 for individuals
- no more than $3,000 for couples
However, the SSA does exempt the following from being included in your assets:
- life insurance policies with a face value of $1,500 or less
- your car (usually)
- burial plots for you and members of your immediate family
- up to $1,500 in burial funds for you and up to $1,500 in burial funds for your spouse
- the home and land where you live
