Assembly Bill 2589
Assembly Bill 2589 is proposing new Child Tax Credit payments. The bill was proposed by Los Angeles assemblyman Miguel Santiago, but it could become reality.
AB 2589 would expand on the Young Child Tax Credit, offering a one-time payment of $2,000 per child to lower-income families. This bill also aims to raise the minimum amount to $255 for the California Earned Income Tax Credit.
This bill would target the poorest families in California. Right now, in 1.7 million children are at risk of falling back into poverty. The payments would go to families earning less than $30,000 annually.
There is a long way for AB 2589 to travel before reaching approval and becoming a reality. However, California has historically been more generous than other states in terms of the assistance provided.
