The Canandaigua City Council is set to consider giving delinquent property tax payers a one-time break on interest and penalties.

The Finger Lakes Times reports the council will hold a public hearing tonight to discuss amending the local law that sets penalties for overdue taxes. Under the proposal, the deadline to pay without incurring late fees would move from May 31 to June 30. Interest on unpaid taxes after July 1 would go from three to one percent. After August 1, the interest would go from six to three percent. As of September 1, interest would be six percent, increasing by one percent each month after that.

The council may vote on amending the local law at its regular meeting following the hearing.
