Pete Alonso’s grand slam lifts Mets over Nationals

The New York Mets improved to 3-0 with a 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night at Nationals Park.

With one swing of the bat, Pete Alonso provided most of the offense. He launched his first career grand slam in the fifth inning.

The other run came in the ninth after Brandon Nimmo scored on a wild pitch.

Chris Bassitt tossed six shutout innings, allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out eight in his Mets debut.

Drew Smith (1.0 IP), Joely Rodríguez (1.1 IP) and Adam Ottavino (0.2 IP) each recorded scoreless appearances.

The Mets will go for the four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m.
