Newark graduate Ben Cowles hits home run in Yankees spring training game

Former Newark Reds Baseball star Ben Cowles hit his first home run with the New York Yankees in a spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

He crushed a long two-run home run over the scoreboard in left-center field to cap off an eight-run eighth inning for the Yankees. According to Statcast, it had an exit velocity of 107.0 mph. The distance was not tracked.

The 22-year-old was drafted by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.

Cowles graduated from Newark in 2018 and played for the Newark Pilots of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2018 before attending the University of Maryland.
