Former Newark Red and Section V standout Ben Cowles is on the move again, landing with his third Major League Baseball organization in just over a year.
The Chicago White Sox claimed the 2018 Newark High School graduate off waivers on Wednesday and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte.
Cowles was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs earlier this week to make room on its 40-man roster for veteran first baseman Carlos Santana. The Cubs had acquired Cowles last July in a deal that sent reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to the Bronx.
The versatile infielder has spent this season in Triple-A, where he has struggled to find consistency at the plate. He is batting .238 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .382 slugging percentage to go with nine home runs and 44 RBI, though he has shown speed on the basepaths with 16 steals.
Over 442 minor-league games, Cowles is slashing .260/.349/.414 with 39 homers, 202 RBI, 185 walks, 68 stolen bases, and 475 strikeouts.
