Newark edges Pal-Mac for Class B1 boys sectional title, first sectional championship since 2016

For the first time since 2016, the Newark Reds hoisted the Section V trophy in boys basketball.  The Reds came away victorious over fellow Finger Lakes East compatriot and league winner Pal-Mac, who are still searching for their first sectional title since 2005.

It was a surprising low scoring affair in the game, with both teams averaging over 57 points per game entering the contest.  After the first quarter, the Red Raiders held a 8-7 advantage over Newark, and they held the lead until halftime, 18-17.  Newark in the third quarter attempted to take control, and secured a lead for the first time since the opening bucket of the game, exiting the third with a 28-22 lead.  Newark was able to withstand the Pal-Mac push, which included a tie at 35 points in the waning moments of the contest.  With a couple of key blocks and free throws made, the Reds exited with a 40-37 victory over their rivals from the Finger Lakes East.

Newark moves on to face Wellsville next week.
