New York State needs more money for Emergency Rental Assistance Program to fulfill all qualifying applications

Governor Kathy Hochul has called on the federal government to provide more aid in rent relief because the amount originally given is not enough to cover everyone who qualifies.

Originally $2.6 billion was given to New York State and $1.6 has been distributed or promised to landlords with eligible tenants.

The issue? The state is still getting thousands of qualifying applications a week and half of the funding is already gone.

Despite additional funding, like the $250 million for tenants that didn’t qualify, it still is not enough.

New York took so long to roll out their funding the federal government almost took it back to give to other states that needed it.

Now, any leftover funding is set to be distributed to states that have already used 65% of the original amount given to them.
