Swimmer struck by pontoon boat on Keuka Lake: Sheriff seeks public’s help finding operator who left scene

Sheriff Jim Allard says his office investigated an incident where a swimmer was struck by a boat on Keuka Lake in the town of Wayne.

Deputies interviewed the victim — who said he was swimming on his back at about 6:45 p.m. near the east shore of Keuka Village when a dark colored pontoon boat traveled directly over him.

The victim said the boat never stopped or slowed. A witness reported that the operator was standing and did not appear to have known he struck a swimmer — continuing north from the scene.

The victim was treated and released. However, the only description of the boat or operator is that of a white male operating a dark colored pontoon boat.

Sheriff Allard is asking for the public’s help identifying the boat or operator.

There is a 5 mph speed limit within 200 feet of shore.
