The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating a large manure line leak in Cayuga County.
It happened in the town of Genoa, according to the Cayuga County Health Department, who announced the investigation in a press release.
They say that on August 19 the Health Department received a report from the DEC that on August 18 a manure spill occurred at Willett Dairy int he town of Genoa.
A manure transfer line was found to be discharging liquid that made its way to a tributary of Big Salmon Creek.
DEC officials say approximately 30,000 to 50,000 gallons of manure may have been released in the incident.
When the farm became aware of the spill they took steps to stop, contain, and reduce the spill volume. The discharge stopped, and an investigation into the incident remains active.
