Following the death of 93,000 people to drug overdoses for the year 2020, New York state Sen. Pete Harckham is asking when a state of emergency will be declared.
Recently, Governor Cuomo announced a state of emergency regarding guns and committed over $135 million towards the issue.
Harckham said that while gun issues should be addressed, four times as many deaths occur due to opioid overdoses compared to gun violence.
Harckham is also advocating for Medication Assisted Treatment on demand as well as funding for crisis intervention centers.
