The Office National Marine Sanctuaries, which is run through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, drafted and published a plan for The Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary.
This is something the affects the communities bordering the lake.
The sanctuary allows for the management, research, and improvement of public access to “a nationally significant collection of maritime heritage resources,” according to the NOAA website.
This includes the designation of shipwrecks in the eastern part of Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands.
The NOAA wants to hear what the public has to say and meetings have been set up:
