A petition has been launched against the recently launched Excelsior Pass. The federal government is working on a similar ‘passport’, which will grant individuals access to various events- assuming they have received the COVID-19 vaccine, or negative COVID test.
A petition on Change.org was launched last week notes that the pass could discriminate against people who cannot be vaccinated. Security of the app has also been questioned. IBM is developing it.
The state says there are robust safety measures in place; and that it’s ultimately a voluntary program.
Individuals can choose how much information is shared with entities via the pass. However, some argue that this is an example of state leaders using the pandemic to chip away at individual freedom.
The pass uses a QR code to convey an individual’s status to the venue in question.
