UR Medicine announces temporary closure of surgical center due to surge in COVID cases

UR Medicine says it’s temporarily shutting down a surgical center in Rochester to deal with the accelerating cases of COVID-19 in the region.

Specifically, the Surgery Center at Sawgrass will shut down temporarily on Wednesday. Employees from the center will be redeployed at hospitals operated by URMC.

“We understand that such an action is difficult for our patients, staff and faculty, as many cases have already been deferred or delayed, but there is no better alternative based on our current projections,” an email sent to media in the region read.

The closure is not expected to be long-term and intended to help the hospital system navigate the short-term rise in COVID-19 cases.
