RIT opens season with 8-5 victory over Clarkson

Rochester Institute of Technology junior forward Will Calverley (Scarborough, Ontario) totaled three goals and an assist to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over No. 9 Clarkson, Friday night, to open the 2020-21 campain.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • RIT built a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by senior forward Jake Hamacher (Corona, Calif.) and Calverley. Sophomore forward Elijah Gonsalves (Scarborough, Ontario) caused a turnover in the neutral zone before Hamacher deked his way to the left post with 8:47 on the clock. Calverley took a return pass from junior forward Kobe Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta) on a right-wing rush and scored from close range with 6:30 left in the first.
  • Clarkson got on the board early in the second after freshman forward Alex Campbell intercepted a clearing pass in the RIT zone and scored at 17:03.
  • The teams traded goals during an 18-second span in the closing minutes of the period. RIT junior forward Jake Joffe (Toronto, Ontario)scored off a feed from senior forward Nick Bruce (Fall River, Nova Scotia/Johnstown Tomahawks) for a power-play tally with 1:19 on the clock before Clarkson sophomore forward Anthony Romano tallied at 1:01 to make it a 3-2 game heading into the third.
  • Clarkson scored twice in the first 1:17 of the final period to take a 4-3 lead, but RIT scored five of the final six goals in the last 10 minutes of regulation to put the game out of reach.
