Deputies: Newark man had BAC almost twice legal limit

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Newark man following a traffic stop on Hanley Road in the town of Palmyra.

Deputies say Samuel Gilpin, 21, of Newark was stopped by deputies for unlawfully stopping his vehicle in the roadway. Upon speaking with him, deputies observed an odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and glassy eyes.

Gilpin then failed field sobriety tests and refused a roadside, preliminary breath test.

As result, he was taken into custody and transported to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office where his BAC was found to be 0.15%.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a BAC over 0.08%, stopping on the highway, and refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test.
