Rose driver charged with vehicular manslaughter after triple-fatal crash

A 37-year-old man from Rose was arrested this past week on a number of felony charges after a length investigation into a fatal crash that took the life of a Wayne County woman, her unborn son, and another person.

It happened on May 26th, 2019 on Savannah Spring Lake Road. The vehicle operated by Christopher Kirkey, 37, hit a guard rail and bridge abutment – before ending up in Crusoe Creek.

Deputies reported after that two passengers in the vehicle, Kayla Mettler, 27, and Michael Schute, 32, of Rose died. The 27-year-old was also pregnant, according to investigators.

For his role in the crash Kirkey was charged with felony counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, and manslaughter. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
