Of all the setbacks the Mets could ill afford in an attempt to rally toward National League relevance, an injury to Jacob deGrom topped the list. But the Mets managed to overcome it for at least one night on Wednesday, storming back to win a 5-4 game over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Uncharacteristically imperfect from the jump at Citizens Bank Park, deGrom allowed three runs in the second inning, though his defense did him no favors throughout the rally. He appeared unhappy in the dugout between innings and did not return to the mound for the third due to what the team called a right hamstring spasm.
Instead, Michael Wacha took over in relief, keeping the Mets in the game with four innings of one-run ball. The team drew closer on a J.D. Davis two-run homer off Zack Wheeler in the sixth, then tied things on Davis’ RBI double two innings later.
