NBT Bank Stadium’s field replacement project has begun, with old soil tossed aside and fresh sod expected to be installed and tucked away well before the unfriendly bite of winter.
Current field removal started earlier this week, and workers on Thursday were shaving away the final blades of the outfield grass. One piece of machinery, called a combiner, drove across the width of the field, spewing a compacted mixture of dirt and grass into an adjacent truck. Two trucks took turns lining up next to the combiner and then circling back to dump the soil behind the left-field fence.
Once the grass removal and regrading process is complete, roughly 100,000 square feet of new Kentucky Bluegrass will be laid down. The new field should be fully placed by mid-October.
