Visitation at the Yates County Jail will resume this weekend with new rules and limitations after the COVID-19 pandemic restricted it in March.
Sheriff Ron Spike says preventing the virus from entering the jail was paramount. A tablet program was implemented for video visitation.
Moving forward visitation will be non-contact only, and visitors must follow specific requirements, including completing COVID screening prior to entering.
They will be limited to thirty minutes to allow time for correction officers to perform sanitation requirements between visits. Other miscellaneous safety protocols will apply.
The jail visitation area within the jail has been modified with Plexiglas screening for added separation. A variance was sought from the NYS Commission of Correction, the county jail oversight state entity, for the new rules and modifications that was recently approved. Yates County Public Health has also approved the visitation plan.
